135 News to Know
The old desks, chairs and bookcases piling up in Orland School District 135's boiler rooms and classrooms could have gone to the landfill but will instead help outfit growing schools in the south suburbs and more than 5,000 miles away, district officials said. Most of the cabinets, desks, chairs and chalkboards that left little room to stand in Center School's gym will help get two rural Liberian schools, slated for construction later this fall. Parents of incoming grade 6-8 students will be picking up devices for the 2014-15 school year. The following dates have been reserved for families to pick-up devices with additional details to be provided later:
- Orland Jr. High Monday, August 18th
- Jerling Jr. High Tuesday, August 19th
- Century Jr. High Wednesday, August 20th

The first day of classes for the new school year is August 25 for grades 1-8 and Kindergarten classes will begin August 26th. The District is busy preparing with many projects. Orland School District 135 was awarded $126,000 through the Illinois School and Campus Safety Grant to enhance the District’s safety program. The grant was announced earlier this year with eligibility based on successful applicants to purchase and install physical security enhancements in public schools. Click here to read the full story.
