Question: I heard that District 135 is not going to let students and staff go on the Washington D.C. field trip. Is that true?
Answer: The Village of Orland Park is no longer sponsoring the trip for residents due to travel liabilities. However, the company that the Village worked with in organizating the trip, Travel Services, Inc., is going to continue to host the trip with the District's cooperation. The District will help advertise the event to students, and will also allow staff members to serve as chaperones on the trip. Travel Services, Inc. will reimburse the District for the cost of substitute teachers. Students who go on the trip will be given an excused absence, as had been the practice in the past. Parents with questions about the D. C. trip should contact their child's school.

At the September 10, 2007 Committee of the Whole meeting of the District 135 Board of Education, the issue of the non-aligned grading scales was discussed. It was noted that District 135 had changed its grading scale to align with District 230; District 230 later changed its scale to the one they currently employ.
The Board members agreed that District 135's grading scale would be left as is for the time being. They agree with the recommendation of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Karen R. Udell, and Director of Curriculum Julie Oberwise, who note that a curved grading scale is best for the District 135 students; it sets a standard that students and staff have become accustomed to, and the success students have shown in the classroom and on standardized testing indicates that the grading scale is an effective tool.
