The Library Media Program serves as the information hub of the school. Its purpose is to provide opportunities for students to become critical seekers of knowledge, users of media in all formats, and independent, lifelong learners. Students and staff freely access the facility throughout the day for a variety of needs. Students visit the library individually, in small groups, or as a whole class.
The Library Media Program has three components which serve the purpose of fostering a lifelong love of learning. To facilitate program goals, media personnel work closely with teachers to integrate the Library program with the classroom curriculum.
1. Literature Appreciation (read-alouds, storytelling, or book talks promoting the love of reading)
2. Library Skills (locational familiarity with library organization)
3. Resource Based Learning While teaching traditional library skills promotes physical access to materials, resource based learning promotes intellectual access to information. It is critical that students learn to access, utilize, and communicate information. Many opportunities are provided for students to research topics of personal interest and curricular need using a variety of print and electronic sources. Doing research fosters higher level critical thinking skills as students gather, organize, and present information. This component of the Library Program has been fully articulated by the District 135 Information Literacy Committee, which has written a complete K-8 curriculum to address this aspect of our students' education.
