Independent Reading Program
 

Goals: 
*
 
to increase the student's independent reading skills
*
to foster a love of reading
*
to encourage reading a variety of literary genres

Expectations:
* R
eading vouchers must be signed by a parent or guardian
upon completion of the reading requirement.
* S
tudents are required to read a variety of genres;
at least one different genre per quarter.
* N
o magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, or comic books will be accepted.
* S
tudents may not turn in vouchers for previously read books.
* P
arents should approve of books

Grading:
*
Reading Vouchers count for 10% of the student's Literature grade.
* Vouchers not turned at the end of the quarter cannot be turned in during a later quarter, and will earn no credit.

Independent Reading Schedule
2008-2009 Reading Voucher Due Dates
This schedule is to assist in time organization and management.  Vouchers will only be accepted during the week of the due date, and turning in all or the majority of vouchers at the end of the quarter will not be allowed.  Books cannot be carried over to the next quarter; any vouchers not turned in at the end of the quarter will not receive credit.  Happy reading!!

DAILY supplies:
(materials to be brought to EACH class)
3-ring binder (1- 1.5 inches)
dividers
loose leaf paper
blue or black pens
red pens
sticky notes
silent reading book
assignment notebook 

 
The following is a list of AS NEEDED supplies:
(students will be notified in advance when they are needed)
index cards
scissors
colored pencils
markers
glue
ruler
  
Please note:
*only ONE set of supplies is needed for BOTH Literature and Language Arts.

 
 

Absent/Late Work

Per school policy, students have two days for every one day absent to make up work that was assigned during the students' absence (see student handbook),

* Late work will be accepted up to ONE week past the DUE date. The work will be lowered one letter grade ('A' to 'B', etc.) for each day late.

* It is the students' responsibility to check the Absent binder,  and to turn in any late or missing assignments.

 Extra Credit

* Students may submit articles (sports, entertainment, reviews, puzzles, poetry, etc.) to the school newspaper.  No more than one article per class  (two articles total) will be accepted each quarter.

* Extra credit questions may be given on various quizzes and tests.

* Extra credit worksheets may occasionally be available.

* Individual extra credit assignments will not be given.

* All extra credit must be received a minimum of one week before the quarter ends; extra credit will not be accepted during the last week of the quarter.

Philosophy:
I have a life-long love of reading and writing that involved missing the school bus because I was so engrossed in a book, and creating plays for my friends and relatives to perform.  I hope to inspire and guide my students to enjoy and excell at reading, writing, and learning.
