Independent Reading Program
 

Goals: 
* 
to increase independent reading skills

*
to foster a love of reading

*
to encourage reading a variety of literary genres

Expectations:
  * Students are required to independently read
a variety of genres throughout the school year.

*
S
tudents will complete at least one independent
project pertaining to their reading per quarter.
Project guidelines will be specified in class.

Grading:
* 
Independent Reading Projects count for
10% of the student's final grade.

* Projects not completed at the end of the quarter cannot
be turned in during a later quarter and will earn no credit.

DAILY supplies:
(materials to be brought to EACH class)

3-ring class binder (1- 1.5 inches)
loose leaf paper
blue or black pen
red pen for correcting
silent reading book
assignment notebook 

 
The following is a list of AS NEEDED supplies:
(students will be notified in
advance when they are needed)
sticky/post-it notes
index cards
scissors
colored pencils
markers
glue
ruler
  

 
 
Absent/Late Work

* Per school policy, students have two days for every one day absent to make up work that was assigned during the student's absence (see student handbook).

* Late work that is one day past the due date
will be accepted at 75% credit.

* Late work that is two days past the due date
will be accepted for 50% credit.


* After two days, the work must still be completed but
will only be accepted for a maximum of 25% credit.

* Please use your time wisely and plan ahead, especially
for technical difficulties such as
limited access to computers or printers. 

* Remember that computers are always available 
before or after school in Homework Lab.

* It is the students' responsibility to check
the
While You Were Out binder and
to turn in any late or missing assignments.

Extra Credit

*Extra credit may be earned through a submission
to the school newspaper.  This submission may include
an interview, an article, a review, an essay, a comic strip,
an editorial, poetry, and etc.  Only one submission per
quarter may earn extra credit.  Please see class handout
for detailed information. 

* Extra credit questions may occasionally
be given on various tests or quizzes. 


  * Extra credit assignments may occasionally be given.

* Individual extra credit assignments will not be given.

* Extra credit is not designed to raise a letter grade, as
students should focus on everyday classroom performance.

* Extra credit will not be accepted unless all
previous assignments have been turned in.

* All extra credit must be received a minimum of one week before the quarter ends; extra credit will not be accepted during the last week of the quarter.

that involved missing the school bus because
I was so engrossed in a book. 

I hope to inspire and guide my students to enjoy and
