Allow Me to Introduce Myself
Hello! My name is Kim DeVries and I will be your child's Social Studies teacher for this school year. This will be my 8th year teaching Social Studies at Century and I love it!
I earned my Bachelor's degree from Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, majoring in Elementary and Middle School education with concentrations in English, Science, and Social Studies. Social Studies is my favorite, especially United States history, and I thoroughly enjoy working with middle school students. I also received my Master's of Curriculum and Instruction through National Louis University and my Master's of Educational Administration degree through Governors State University. I enjoy spending time with my husband and trying to keep up with my one-year-old daughter.
Having been a product of District 135 myself, I am aware of what a special and wonderful district it is and all it has to offer your child. I am very excited and enthusiastic about the upcoming year and look very forward to working with you and your child as we explore the 20th Century!
Major Units of Study
Social Studies this year will emphasize how the U.S. developed into a world power during the 20th Century. Students' reading, research and thinking skills will be strengthened and reinforced during the following units of study:
-
Constitution
-
Immigration
-
Industrial Revolution
-
World War I, II, & Vietnam
-
1920's & Depression Era
-
Cold War & Korean War
-
Holocaust
-
1950's
Late Work Policy
Late work will be accepted however, for every day it is late points will be deducted as follows:
1 day — 25%
2 days — 50%
3 or more days will earn 1 point for the assignment.
Late work really hurts! I encourage students to turn their work in on time! As their teacher, I am not only teaching history, but responsibility and time management as well.
Absent Work
If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to obtain any notes or assignments and find out what they have missed. (There are several systems in place in the classroom to assist with this: WYWO (While You Were Out folder), Absent sheets in mailbox, etc.) Extra copies of handouts and homework are available in a designated area in the classroom.
I am available during most lunch hours if extra help is needed. I would be more than happy to help, but please let me know in advance if you plan on staying and make sure you pack a lunch beforehand.
Success in Social Studies
One of my major goals as a teacher is to help your child be successful and reach his/her goals. This can only be achieved with a strong partnership between home and school. Here are some ways you can help your child be successful in Social Studies:
-Proofread homework assignments
-Assist in preparing for tests & quizzes
-Review your child's assignment notebook and homework each night
It is important for students to come prepared to ensure success in seventh grade social studies. The following items should be brought to class every day:
-
Assignment Notebook
-
Social Studies binder/folder
-
Social Studies Notebook
-
Loose-leaf Paper
-
Pens and Pencils
-
Highlighter
-
Post-it notes
-
Homework (if applicable)
Grades are weighted based on the following types of work:
-

-
In Class Work 10%
-
