8th Grade Social Studies
Bennett Team
Hello! My name is Victoria Russell and I teach 8th grade Social Studies at Century Jr. High. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with endorsements in Social Science, Mathematics and Language Arts from Governors State University. I also have a Masters Degree in Administration. This is my 18th year of teaching, and I absolutely love it! I enjoy working with students and watching them develop their critical thinking and analytical skills in my classroom. I am happily married with three very active boys. During my free time I enjoy reading, spending time with my family, traveling, and running.

The Global Studies course offers a unique opportunity to take an in-depth look at the world. Our mission, in words borrowed from our textbook, World Geography, will be to gain, "a feel for or an appreciation of, the richness and variety of the face of our planet." Through this course we will come to know the diversity which makes up our global community. While exploring the intriguing topics of Global Studies, we will continue to develop creative thinking skills and problem solving skills through individual and cooperative tasks.

8th Grade Current Events
In order to be an active world citizen, one must be aware of how world events affect them. They also must readily use geography skills, in particular latitude and longitude and be able to apply the five themes of geography to current happenings. The ultimate goal of our weekly current event assignment is to create an awareness of how world events, geography and cultures go hand in hand.
Weekly Assignment:
1. You will cut an article out of the newspaper, take notes from a television or radio source or print an article from the Internet.
1. 2. Be sure to date it in the right hand corner of your paper. Also include the following: Name of newspaper
Headline
Date of paper or story
Source
3. After reading the article, you will compose a summary of the article using the five"W" questions as a guide. (Who, What, When, Where and Why).
4. You will lastly, locate and list the city of the story with exact latitude and longitude (absolute location). To do so you may use an atlas, globe, or map of your choice.
5. Be prepared to present your current event as you may be called upon to do so on the due date. Current Events will be due on Thursday, discussions will be held on Friday.
Credit Given:
You will turn in your summary on Thursday of each week assigned. There will be approximately 5-6 due a quarter. They will be checked on the basis of following directions, five themes, world news, correct location and neatness.
