Digital Cameras in the Classroom

4th Grades

The 4th graders will go on scavenger hunts with the digital cameras in the classroom to help review concepts taught in the computer lab and classroom.  The students will insert and reformat these photographs into a short video.

 

  5th Grades
Many 5th grade classes will have the opportunity to use the digital cameras to ceate a short video yearbook.

The first quarter we spend a lot of time working on our keyboarding skills. The students at High Point, Liberty and Meadow Ridge will now use the new version of our keyboarding software.  With this new version each student will be able to obtain a copy of this software that they can use at home.  Using this at home version will allow them to log in using their school account and complete school keyboarding activities at home.

Of course internet safety is very important in the computer lab.  This month we will discuss not only safe internet practices for school use, but also for home uses such as e-mail and social networking sites.  We will also discuss what the internet is and how it works.

 Lights, Cameras and Action!
 
This month the students will have an opportunity to use digital cameras to take both videos and still pictures for later use in the year.  The students will also learn how to upload these photos to the network and manipulate them using Microsoft Photo Editor.

Microsoft Publisher
The students will begin a project using Microsoft Publisher.  They will use this desktop publisher to create a card for their parents at conference time.  In addition to exploring the tools within Publisher, the students will also have the opportunity to reflect on the first quarter.

Web 2.0 Online Posters at Glogster EDU (5th Grade)
We are always looking for relevant activities for students to enhance their 21st century technology skills and alternatives to expensive printing in the lab. This year  the 5th graders will create a "Glog" or online poster about themselves reflecting on the first quarter during technology class. It will be created on the SAFE, SECURE, PASSWORD PROTECTED site www.edu.glogster.com. This site has been voted the #1 education tool by the Discovery Educators Network and is used by nearly 7 million other students.

Veteran's Day Research (4th)
The 4th grade classes will have the opportunity to use several different applications at once.  They will read and follow the directions from a Word document, look for the answers using Explorer and type the answers into a Publisher document.  This activity gives the students practice moving back and forth between different open applications and learn a little bit about Veteran's Day. 
 
  
 Spreadsheets!!! (4th)
The fourth grades will have an opportunity to create and enter data into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.  Once the data is entered, the students will create graphs for the class data.
 
 
Microsoft Word (4th)
The students will use the Labels Freature in Microsoft Word to create return address labels and gift tags.
 
 
Veteran's Database (5th)
 The students will create a database from scratch in Microsoft Access using statistics from previous American Wars.
 
Spreadsheets!!! (5th)
The fifth grade students will use a spreadsheet to figure the cost of a meal for their family from a Market Day form.  The students will enter formulas into the spreadsheet to keep track of their spending as they shop by having the computer add tax, keep a running total, and letting them know what they have remaining from their original allowance.
Simple Machines (4th)
The students will have a chance to do a small amount of research on-line and then use the drawing tools within PowerPoint to illustrate 6 different types of simple machines.

Geometry Booklets (4th)
In this activity the students will create an eight page booklet to help review for the upcoming ISATs.  In addition to reviewing geometry, the students will learn and review a number of technology skills including using the drawing and object toolbars in Microsoft Publisher.

Measurement Booklets (5th Grade)
This year the 5th graders will make Measurement Booklets.  In addition to reviewing measurement for the ISATs the students will learn to make themselves more proficient in Microsoft Office.  They will learn to use shortcuts, navigate between multiple open documents and learn how group and ungroup objects.

All About Me PowerPoint (5th)
 The 5th grade students will create a PowerPoint about themselves.  This PowerPoint will hyperlinked so that it will be viewed more like a webpage and less like a slideshow.  In addition, the students will be able to add animation and sound effects.
