"Scientists can prove that it is aerodynamically impossible for the bumble bee to fly — its body is too heavy and its wings too light to sustain flight. But the bumble bee chooses not to be influenced by science's negative viewpoint and flies anyway."
When you look at the bee, think this thought…

Homework Binder: At the beginning of the school year, all 4th and 5th grade students will be given a 3 ring binder with a pencil case. The LEFT side of the binder is for transporting items that should be LEFT at home. The RIGHT side of the binder is for transporting items that should be RETURNED to school. The pencil case should contain pencils, a highlighter, and perhaps an eraser.
-
Each quarter there is a grade given for homework in both math and science. The homework grade is worth 100 points. 5 points are taken away for each late assignment. The number of points remaining at the end of the quarter becomes the homework grade in percent.
-
Daily homework is checked but is not given a grade.
-
Students will be given 1 Busy Bee per quarter. The Busy Bee gives the student one more day to submit the assignment. While the goal is to not use a Busy Bee or have any late assignments, there may be a time when a student forgets to bring home or bring back to school their homework. The Busy Bee can only be used for daily homework, not for long term assignments. It cannot be used on homework that is study material for a test. If a student uses a Busy Bee or has a late assignment they will walk the track that day during lunch recess. The late work must be completed at home for the next day or else it counts as late again. Students are not permitted to call home for late assignments.
- Most homework is done in journals. There is a practice workbook in math which is assigned most days.
-
Since homework is practice of material covered during the school day, I am asking you to refrain from teaching your child the work brought home. It makes it difficult to properly assess the student's needs if all homework comes back to school corrected. Please assist them but if it is apparent they need more teaching, have them come to school and talk to me. Your child needs to take responsibility for their learning. If they come to me and show me their unsuccessful attempts at the homework I will provide assistance and usually the homework is not considered late.
-
All basic skills are taught on an as needed basis. Repetitive practice must be done at home.
-
4th & 5th homework: student sheets, math facts, facts, facts, science labs, research, reading in science, study for tests.
