Absent Work
If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to obtain any notes or assignments and find out what they have missed. A student has the number of days they were absent to turn in their work, without a late deduction.

7th Grade Language Arts
Curriculum
- Vocabulary: Vocabulary will be introduced through the new Literature book. Flashcards will be included in the word study. Root words will be given throughout the year, by using the District's new book
- Grammar: Grammar will be intertwined with each reading. Additional grammar will be given on an as need basis. We will also include grammar in our daily oral language. (DOL)
- Reading: Students will read at least two novels together as a class. (Left For Dead and The Outsiders)
- Writing Component: Students will be required to write a Narrative essay. Major topics addressed will be: Rafts, Journal writing, extended reader's response, and grammar exercises. More content would include paragraphs, content skills, and the mechanics of writing. Other instructional activities will include: essential writing skills out of the District "Writing Binder" , sentence diagramming, websites, outlines, graphic organizers, and reflection papers. Students will also practice using the 6 Traits of Writing (Ideas, Organization, Conventions, Word Choice, Voice and Sentence Fluency).
- Listening and Speaking: Students will practice listening and speaking skills through discussions, group participation and presentations.
- Poetry: We will have an entire unit on Poetry. Students will be required to recognize different forms of poetry. Students choose top three poems, revise, reflect and submit.
- Literary Devices: We will work on these devices throughout the year. The devices will also be implemented into their writing pieces and reading comprehension from text and novels.
Homework:
- Root words homework will be issued each night.
- Students will need to do rewrites on their essays at home.
- Some poetry pieces will need to be composed at home.
- Independent Quarterly reading projects will be assigned and explained to the students
Quizzes/Tests /Assessments:
- Quizes willl be given on Vocab words from the new Literature books
- Short story/text (from Literature Book) tests will be given at the culmination of the reading.Novel Assessments will be given throughout readings (specific dates will be given to students and updated on web page).
- Literary Device tests will be given once a month.
- Writing assessments will include first draft, peer editing and final draft. Rubrics will be included on all writing assessments. Additional assessments will be taken from mini lessons presented.

What is Research? (7th Grade - 9 week Rotation)
Research is an extension of Language Arts that focuses on researching information through a variety of sources and creating a final project based on that research. Students will focus on the following units of study:
- Using the Library
- Understanding the 5 W's of Research, plagiarism, and citing sources.
- Understanding the Research process
- Develop note-taking strategies.
- Locating, extracting, and organizing information
- Writing an expository essay from independent research (2 page essay with Work Cite Page)
- Presenting research findings to a peer audience with visual project
8th Grade Research (9 Week Rotation)
Research is an extension of Language Arts that focuses on researching information through a variety of sources and creating a final project based on that research. Students will apply knowledge from 7th grade and focus on the following units of study:
- Utilizing the program Career Cruising to match a student's skills and interests with a career.
- Developing oral communication skills through interviewing
- Writing an expository essay from independent research based on chosen career (3 Page Essay with Work Cite Page)
- Presenting research findings to a peer audience with visual project
Background:
I graduated from the University of St. Francis in Joliet. I received my Master's Degree from National Louis University in Curriculum and Instruction. This is my sixth year teaching at Jerling Junior High.
