Tips for practicing Spanish outside of school:
-go to a Mexican restaurant, try to order/greet your server in Spanish
-try to read/comprehend food labels, instruction booklets, or other products with English/Spanish translations on them
-write letters/texts/e-mails to friends in Spanish
Using Microsoft word: press the "number lock" key on the right side of the keyboard (button will light up when activated). Then, as you hold down the ALT key, press the following codes on the number pad to the right:
á ALT 160
é ALT 130
í ALT 161
ó ALT 162
ú ALT 163
ñ ALT 164
¡ ALT 173
¿ ALT 168
Texting accent marks and tildes: hold down the letter key until various options appear, then choose the Spanish symbol. (Remember, Spanish symbols always slant to the right, the direction to which you read)
-listen to Spanish radio stations: MEGA 95.5 or Máxima 93.5
-put your favorite movie in Spanish: go to the main menu and select audio/language. Change the language to Spanish and then change the subtitles to English
-watch Dora/Diego or other cartoons that emphasize Spanish
-watch the Travel Channel or the History Channel for specials on Mexico, Spain, or other Spanish-speaking countries
-check out the collection of Spanish or bilingual books at the Orland Park Public Library
-go to the National Museum of Mexican Art (google it or take a brochure located on the shelf in the classroom)
-have fun with Spanish in any way possible! Practice it with friends, family, or any other way so that you maintain the knowledge base you are acquiring this year :-)
