Class Overview
This year, we will be focused on building language-based skills. Mainly, we will begin everyday with Daily Oral Language and continue with any of the following activities: grammar, writing, textbook reading, novel reading, vocabulary studies, and book projects. We will be using Prentice Hall textbooks this year entitled Literature and Writing and Grammar. Each student will receive a book number and the students are responsible for these books all school year.  The books will mostly stay in the classroom, but are available for home use at any time with proper notification.

Materials Needed
All students must have the following materials by the beginning of the second week of school:
1.      1 large 3-ring binder (used for DOL, Language Arts, Literature);
        PLEASE REMEMBER TO PURCHASE DIVIDERS!

2.      1 folders with pockets
        (used for storing homeworK, etc.)

3.      regular supplies (i.e. paper, pens, pencils, coloring supplies)

Grades
Grades will be based on student involvement and effort put forth. Rubrics will be given for most of the written and oral projects and presentations.

District 135 Grading Scale:         Grades will be based on the following:
            94-100             A             Homework
            86-93               B             Participation
            75-85               C             Quizzes
            68-74               D             Tests
            Below 67          F              Writing
                                                    Projects/Presentations
Discipline
Disciplinary issues will be handled according to the guidelines listed in the school handbook.

Tardies
Students will be issued a tardy if they fail to enter a class before the bell rings. All tardies will be recorded by the teacher. The first tardy will be considered a warning to the student. At the occurrence of a second tardy, parents or guardians will be notified. A third tardy (and any others that follow) will result in an office-issued detention.

Bathroom Policy
Students are expected to use their passing period time for restroom-related issues. Yet, students can use one of their ""supply passes"" to use the restroom during class. However, once their passes are gone they will be denied bathroom privileges unless it is an extreme case. Please keep in mind that permission to use the restroom can be revoked at any time if a student abuses this policy.

Absentee/Late Work
If absent from school, a student will receive two days per every day absent to complete and turn in work, in accordance with school policy. Any work requested by a parent or guardian will be sent home promptly. If work is not requested during an absence, students will be expected to ask for the work missed during their absence.

Students are expected to turn work in on time. If a student fails to turn in homework on the assigned due date, a yellow card signature will be issued. The student will then be held responsible for turning in the assignment the next day for full credit. If the assignment is still not produced then the student will be given a zero.

If three or more assignments are missing, the student might be asked to attend Homework Lab. Homework Lab is held at Jerling Tuesday through Friday during zero hour (7:41 – 8:27). In addition, a Reading Lab is available Tuesdays after school (3:15 – 4:00).

Silent Reading
Silent Reading will be conducted every week on Wednesday (during Language Arts) and Thursday (during Literature) for the first fifteen minutes of the period.  Students are expected to bring their own materials (i.e. appropriate books and magazines) and be prepared to read. A classroom library is available for student use and check-out. In addition, students will be taken to the school library every few weeks for book check-out.  Please encourage your children to bring something that interests them -- that helps to build good reading habits!

Extra Credit
Opportunities for extra credit will be offered throughout the class. Currently, for my regular Language Arts students, I offer a quarterly Extra Credit Book Club.  At the beginning of each quarter, I will pick a new book off of the current Rebecca Caudill list.  The students can then choose to read it as well.  At the end of the quarter, I will hold a book club meeting that the students can attend. I will ask them questions about the book and the more they answer results in the more extra credit earned (up to 20 points).  Please keep in mind that students with several missing or late assignments will not be allowed to partake of this opportunity.
