Choir Grading Policy

Attendance
Students earn 5 points for each rehearsal attended and 50 points for each concert.
A missed rehearsal will result in a "0" for the day.
Exemptions are made in cases of illness or emergency only.
If a student must miss a concert, a make-up assignment will be given.

Participation
Students receive a Participation grade of 100 points per quarter. 
Students will automatically earn 100 points as long as they participate in all rehearsal activities.  Each infraction will result in a loss of 5 points.

Good Singing Technique
Students receive a Technique grade of 50 points per quarter.
Students earn technique points by practicing good posture, singing with good tone quality, singing in tune and singing with clear diction.

Classwork/Quizzes
Students will occasionally receive grades for classwork and quizzes.
These grades are typically 10-20 points each.

3rd Grade

Here is a list of some of the songs 3rd graders will learn to play on recorder:

4th Grade
The 4th grade students utilize a program called "Recorder Karate," in which students earn a different colored belt for each song they are able to perform for the teacher.  Songs progress from white belt to black and get harder throughout the program.  Here is a list of the songs in the program:
  • White Belt - Hot Cross Buns
  • Yellow Belt - Gently Sleep
  • Orange Belt - Merrily We Roll Along
  • Green Belt - It's Raining
  • Purple Belt - Old MacDonald Had a Farm
  • Blue Belt - When the Saints Go Marching In
  • Red Belt - Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
  • Brown Belt - Amazing Grace
  • Black Belt - Ode to Joy
  • Patriot Belt - The Star-Spangled Banner




5th Grade

Fifth grade students participate in a guitar unit.  Throughout this unit, students learn guitar fundamentals, such as the parts of the guitar, finger-plucking, playing with a pick, notes on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings, and some simple chords.  The guitar students progres through a program named after the popular video game: "Guitar Hero."  In this program students progress through 8 levels:

Guitar Hero Levels
Level 1 Guitar Wannabe Know the parts of the guitar
Level 2 Guitar Novice Know the strings on the guitar
Level 3 Guitar Apprentice Play melodies on the 1st string
Level 4 Guitar Enthusiast Play e minor chord while singing
Level 5 Guitar Amateur Play melodies on 1st & 2nd strings
Level 6 Guitar Master Play C & G7 chords while singing
Level 7 Guitar Expert Play melodies on 1st, 2nd & 3rd strings
Level 8 Guitar Hero Play standard rock riffs on electric guitar



Music Grading Policy

Participation
Students can earn 10 points for each class they attend.
Students will automatically earn 8/10 points (S) as long as they participate in all class activities. 
If a student demonstrates the ability to excel at an activity, s/he will earn "Bonus Points," which bump him/her up to 10/10 (E).
If a student refuses to participate in an activity, they will lost two or more points (N).

Classwork/Quizzes
Students will occasionally receive grades for classwork, quizzes and playing tests.
These grades are typically 10 points each.

Final Grade
Students' final quarter grades are an average of the daily participation grades, classwork and other assignments.
