Mrs. Heidegger's Third Grade Website

Welcome!  My name is Mrs. Heidegger, and this upcoming school year will be my tenth year teaching at Meadow Ridge.  I received a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Illinois University and a master's degree from Saint Xavier University.  I am having a great time with the "rock stars" that are joining me "on tour" through the third grade curriculum during the 2011-2012 school year.

Click on the links below if you'd like to learn more about Room 308's procedures.

Monday Folder
On Mondays, papers and tests your child has completed during the previous week will come home in your child's "Monday Folder" for you to view together. This gives you the opportunity to see what we are doing in school on a weekly basis.  There is a dated sheet in this folder.  I would like you to sign this sheet on the appropriate line once you have viewed and discussed your child's work with him/her.  Any "Correct and Return" (CR) papers should come back to school on Tuesday after you and your child have reviewed and corrected them.  All other papers should stay at home.

Homework Policy
Homework is an integral part of the learning process.  Research has shown that homework helps children develop good study habits and fosters a positive attitude toward school.  In third grade, your child receives homework daily with the exception of Fridays.  The only time your child will have homework over the weekend is make-up work or long term projects.  At the end of each day, students write down the homework in their assignment notebooks (provided by the school).  These notebooks help teach the children organization as well as responsibility.

Missing Work Policy
Completed homework is expected to be returned the day after it has been assigned.  If an assignment is not turned in on time, it is recorded as a "Missing Assignment."  A pink "Homework Notice" will be filled out by your child and sent home to obtain a parent signature.  In addition, the student may lose morning recess privileges for a day.  Students receive one homework pass each quarter.  At the end of the year, any unused homework passes will be entered into a raffle.

Reading for Fun
As a class we read a variety of fictional stories, poetry, and non-fiction materials.  In addition to reading content material, it is important to encourage children to read for fun.  We have independent reading during the week in which students record the books they have read in a daily reading log provided by the school.  Students should have a book(s) available in their desks.  In addition to reading at school, your child is expected to read at home for 15 minutes 15 days out of the month.  A calendar and detailed note explaining the program will be sent home each month.  Please continue to read with your child.  I'm sure you enjoy it as much as your child does.

Classroom Management Plan
Our classroom management system is called the "Rock Star Jar." If an individual, a group, or even the entire class is especially good at following the class rules, they put their name(s) into the rockstar jar. At the end of the week, I pull a few names and they're rewarded with a prize. In addition, I use a system I call "Signals of Good Behavior." Each child is assigned a number on the stoplight chart. Every child starts each day on green. If a child receives a warning for his/her behavior, he/she will move his/her number to yellow. If the number gets moves to red, he/she loses morning recess privileges for a day.

School Management Plan
Our school management system is called the ROAR program. Students can earn paws by demonstrating any of the four ROAR behaviors, which are being respectful, organized, accepting, and responsible. Minors and majors are also employed as part of the school wide management system for students not displaying ROAR-like behavior.
