News from the Computer Lab
from Mrs. Pustz
Here is a brief summary of what the children will be doing in the computer lab.
Kindergarten First Grade
Second Grade Third Grade
Kindergarten: Classes will start coming into the lab during the next month or two. The children will practice typing their name and alphabet. They will become familiar with the shift key, space bar, and the letter keys. If you child has access to a computer and could practice typing their name, it would be helpful when they come to the lab.
First Grade: The first week of computers will be spent using the Type of Learn Jr. program, which helps the children to become reacquainted with the keyboard. The children will be typing stories and poems using Microsoft Word. The topics relate to something that has been taught in the classroom.
Second Grade: The students will begin the year using a touch typing program called Type to Learn 3. First, they are required to complete a lesson during which certain keystrokes are introduced. Then, they must complete a series of activities designed to reinforce the newly learned keys. The children enjoy the program and are very proud of their ability to type without looking at the keyboard and keeping their hands on the home row. We will soon be using our keyboarding skills to type stories.
Third Grade: We will start the year reviewing touch typing with Type of Learn 3. The children continue to improve in both speed and accuracy. The students will soon begin typing essays using Microsoft Word. They will learn to check their spelling and grammar using the "ABC Check" function. They will also learn how to insert a picture into a document. The Type to Learn 3 program will be used occasionally to reinforce touch typing.
