                February
Happy New Year to everyone!  We have just finished our 2nd quarter.  Report cards were sent home on January 22.  Our staff and students are moving full speed ahead as we enter the 3rd quarter.  This quarter we are gearing up for ISAT testing in Grade 3.  We are also testing students in reading and writing in all grades to see how much progress has been made.  Please continue to support your child at home by looking through their backpack/folder each night, reviewing assignment notebooks, checking homework, reading aloud to them and signing and returning papers on time.  Your support is greatly appreciated.
In an effort to increase communication, I will be sending e-mails to our Prairie families.  The first e-mail was sent out the week of January 18.  If you would like to be sent an e-mail with reminders and/or upcoming events, please be sure to submit your e-mail on the Orland School District's website at the bottom of the homepage.  Be sure to click Prairie school if you would like to receive information specific to Prairie.
And finally, please remember to get your child to school on time.  Just 10 minutes late every day amounts to 30 hours of instruction for the school year.  Students can arrive at 7:45 AM and should be in their classrooms at 7:55 AM.  Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,  Mrs. Ciaccio

              PARENT CORNER
As you know, reading aloud to your child every day is an important way to connect with your child, to share stories, and to increase your child's understanding of the world.  According to Kylene Beers and Bob Probst, both reading experts, the amount of time a child has been read to prior to entering first grade is the single best predictor of how a child will do over 12 years of school.  A student who has been read to each day for a total 20 - 40  minutes (this doesn't have to be consecutive) has a working vocabulary of 40,000 words and has heard over 3 million words.  In contrast, a child who has not been read to every day has a vocabulary of about 10,000 words and has only heard 750,000 words.  As you can see, the gap has already been established by first grade.  If we want our children to be successful, it is important to read and talk to our children.  Please help us in our endeavor to make our children successful in school.  Your child will thank you forever!
                  Snack Food List
When choosing birthday treats, remember that any food item must be from the district's approved snack list. If you need another copy, search the district's home page.

Remember:  When dropping off or picking up your child in the back parking lot, please turn right into the lot and right out of the lot.  Stay in line and be a courteous driver.  Your safety is our number one concern!
