Parent Advisory Committee

About the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC)

A Parent Survey (developed and reviewed by PAC members) is distributed to all parents of students with special needs each spring. On that form, parents have the opportunity to indicate their interest in serving on the PAC. The Director of Special Education reviews the surveys and contacts all interested parents. As openings occur, they are filled by parents from the list.

In order to ensure representation from across the district, parents are chosen based on the school that their child(ren) attend. In addition, in order to ensure that parents with children with varying needs are represented (the needs of a student who receives only speech services are very different from those of a child with multiple needs), parents are also chosen to represent different programs (Speech-Language, Resource/Instructional, Self-Contained, Early Childhood, etc.).

Parents serving on the PAC are not representing their own child's individual interest, rather they bring the perspective of a parent of a child with special needs, a district resident and their own experiences relative to the programs that we offer.

The committee does not meet with the School Board. They advise the Director of Special Education who makes program recommendations to the Superintendent and the School Board.
