Kindergarten Registration Coming Soon!
After a lot of planning and anticipation, Orland School District 135 will be able to offer full day kindergarten beginning the 2016-17 school year. The full day program will mirror the elementary schedule, Monday through Friday.
Superintendent Dr. Janet Stutz said, “I would like to sincerely thank our Board of Education for investing in the research and planning of full day kindergarten. We know it is a financial investment in our students’ future.”
Over the summer, construction began at the District’s primary schools to make room for several new classrooms, and improvements will continue to be made throughout winter break and the summer of 2016.
The Full Day Kindergarten Committee, made up of various teachers, administrators and District parents, had met several times, with its most recent meeting taking place on Thursday, October 8th. According to Director of Curriculum Dave Snyder, “This committee has worked in subcommittees to address the development of the program. Subcommittees and planning have included curriculum, materials and supplies, communication, safety, and orientation. “
The long-awaited program will hold its registration sessions on site: Parents will attend registration at their child’s primary school, either Centennial, Center, Park or Prairie, to register their kindergartener. The District hopes that parents and students alike will enjoy getting to visit their school prior to open house and the start of the school year.
Kindergarten teachers in the District are excited to implement the new full-day program: “The extra time will give more opportunities for in depth learning and further progress of skills. I feel fortunate to be a part of the planning process and hope to provide my professional insight and experience to create a high quality full day Kindergarten program for the children of Orland Park,” said Elly Rochowicz, kindergarten teacher at Prairie School.
While the District encourages all families to opt for the full day program, there will still be half-day kindergarten available for those who are interested.
Ann Czerwonka, English Language Learners (ELL) kindergarten teacher, said, “This is my tenth year teaching the Kindergarten ELL program in which my students attend school all day (one session of Kindergarten in their regular ed. classroom, and a second session with me). I have seen great gains made by these students and feel it is about time that all kindergarteners in the district have that same opportunity.”
The implementation of this full day program will put the District in a better position to provide continued services for all students.
Registration for kindergarten will take place during the month of November. All registrations will take place from 3pm-8pm on the following dates:
Prairie: Tuesday, November 3rd
Centennial: Tuesday, November 10th
Park: Thursday, November 12th
Center: Tuesday, November 17th
