Merciful Minis therapy horses visit ESY at Park School

The miniature horses from Homer Glen organization Merciful Minis visited Orland School District 135’s Extended School Year (ESY) program on July 18th.

Merciful Minis is a local volunteer organization that trains miniature horses to be therapy animals. Volunteers take the horses to schools, hospitals, assisted living and nursing homes, and veterans facilities to share the healing power of therapy animals with those who need it.

Throughout the morning, students of all ages visited with Mercy and Molly, two of the Merciful Minis. The horses were handled by several volunteers each as they walked around a circle of students, showing off their painted hooves, braided hair, and soothing demeanor. Students were assisted by their teachers and paraprofessionals when it was their turn to pet the horses. A smile spread across each student's’ face as they pet the horse and learned about their age, family, and training to become a therapy horse. Many of the organization’s volunteers are former District 135 staff members, and sharing their passion for therapy horses with students is a way for them to give back and stay connected.

According to their website, all of the Merciful Minis are certified therapy horses. To learn more about the Merciful Minis, visit https://mercifulminis.org/
