Students partner with Village, participate in Young Athletes program

For eleven weeks this semester, 90 early childhood students between the ages of three and five participated in the Special Olympics Young Athletes program, coordinated by the Village of Orland Park.

Young Athletes is a program for young children with and without disabilities, and is meant to give all children a chance to be active.  This is the first year that Orland School District 135 students have participated in the Young Athletes program, and the success of the program shows in the students’ progress over the course of the eleven weeks.

Nick Harvey, Recreation Program Supervisor for the Village of Orland Park Special Recreation, said, “All of the students improved socially, physically, and cognitively. I was so proud of the students and I will definitely miss working with them and the staff.”

Students that participate in the Extended School Year program over the summer will also have the opportunity to participate in the Young Athletes program.  District 135 is so proud of each of the young athletes that participated in the games this year.
